Ten Real Things You Can Start Doing Today as a Retiree to Ensure Your Travels Can Continue in This Age of Economic Upheaval
Retirement should be a time of exploration and adventure, but with the current economic climate, many seniors are feeling the pinch. However, there are practical steps you can take to keep your travel dreams alive. Here are ten actionable strategies to help you travel smartly and sustainably, along with my take on them.
1. Create a Travel Budget
Start by assessing your finances. List your income sources, including pensions, Social Security, and any savings. Then, determine how much you can realistically allocate for travel each year. Break this down into monthly savings goals. For example, if you want to travel for two weeks and estimate the costs at $3,000, aim to save $250 a month. Use budgeting apps like Mint or YNAB (You Need A Budget) to track your expenses and savings.
This is so important. That said, don't let it overwhelm you or discourage you from travelling. It is a balancing act.
TIP: Be clear to clarify and identify those fixed costs which you will incur whether travelling or not, and those expenses that could be eliminated if you put travelling as a higher priority.
2. Embrace Off-Peak Travel
Travelling during off-peak seasons can save you a significant amount of money. Research the best times to visit your desired locations. For instance, visiting Europe in late fall or early spring can mean lower prices and fewer crowds. Websites like Skyscanner can help you find the cheapest months to fly. Additionally, consider destinations that are less popular but equally beautiful, such as Portugal instead of Spain or Croatia instead of Italy.
We love off-season or shoulder-season travelling. Not just because it is usually cheaper, but there are fewer crowds. The tradeoff is that the weather may be more unpredictable or too extreme.
3. Utilize Senior Discounts

Don't underestimate this opportunity. We have benefited extensively from parks, museums and performances. Many airlines, hotels, and attractions offer discounts for seniors. Always ask about available discounts when booking. Websites like AARP Travel Center provide resources for finding senior deals. For example, airlines such as American Airlines and Delta often offer special fares for seniors. Additionally, many museums and national parks offer reduced admission prices for older adults, so carry your ID to take advantage of these savings.
4. Consider Alternative Accommodations
Instead of traditional hotels, explore options like vacation rentals through platforms like Airbnb or Vrbo. These can provide unique experiences and often come at a lower cost. For instance, renting a cottage in the countryside can be more affordable than a hotel in a city centre. House swapping is another option; websites like HomeExchange allow you to trade homes with other travellers, providing free accommodation.
We like to use TrustedHousesitters and Hostels.
5. Travel with a Group
Joining a travel group can significantly reduce costs. Organizations like Road Scholar offer educational travel programs specifically for seniors, often including accommodations, meals, and activities at a lower price. Group rates for accommodations and transportation can make travel more affordable. Plus, it’s a great way to meet new friends who share your passion for exploration.
We do this sometimes, especially in more remote areas. It is up to you to strike a balance between flexibility and spontaneity and your set travel plans.
6. Stay Flexible with Your Plans
Speaking of flexibility, being flexible can lead to unexpected savings. If you can adjust your travel dates or destinations based on flight deals or accommodation discounts, you’ll likely find better prices. Use fare alert tools like Google Flights or Hopper to stay informed about price drops. For example, if you notice a significant drop in airfare to a destination you hadn’t considered, be ready to book quickly.
7. Learn to Travel Light
Packing light not only makes travel easier but can also save you money on baggage fees. Invest in quality, versatile clothing that can be mixed and matched. For instance, choose a neutral colour palette that allows for easy coordination. Use packing cubes to organize your luggage and maximize space. This approach allows you to travel with just a carry-on, making your journey smoother and more efficient.
We prefer to check one piece of luggage, but many like to keep it to a carry-on. It's up to you, but getting the right luggage is essential.
8. Leverage Technology
This is number one for me. It is my go-to for research, but so much more. Use travel apps to find the best deals on flights, accommodations, and activities. Apps like Skyscanner and Expedia can help you compare prices across different platforms. Additionally, apps like Google Maps and Citymapper can help you navigate new cities, find local dining options, and even translate languages with tools like Google Translate. Please familiarize yourself with these apps before your trip to maximize their benefits.
9. Volunteer While Travelling
Consider volunteering during your travels. Organizations like WWOOF (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms) offer free or discounted accommodations in exchange for your time and skills. This not only helps you save money but also allows you to give back to the communities you visit. Volunteering can provide a deeper connection to the places you explore, enriching your travel experience.
We are considering this, but so far haven't pursued this option until “volunteering” to housesit counts. 😉
10. Stay Informed About Travel Trends. Research!

This is where I like to think I shine. Keep an eye on travel trends and economic changes that may affect your plans. Subscribe to travel blogs, newsletters, or forums where retirees share their experiences and tips. Websites like Travel + Leisure and Lonely Planet often provide insights into emerging travel trends. Staying informed will help you adapt your travel strategies as needed, ensuring you’re always ready to seize new opportunities.
Being a senior or retired doesn’t have to mean the end of your travel dreams. By implementing these ten strategies, you can navigate the current economic challenges and continue exploring the world. Remember, the key is to stay flexible, informed, and open to new experiences.
