It’s hard to believe it’s been almost 20 years since I moved to Geneva, Switzerland. We lived there for five years when our boys were younger, and it was the perfect place to raise a family. Needless to say, I wasn’t quite a senior then. I don’t find as much to do in Geneva as claimed. How often can you visit The Jet, The Jardin Anglais or the Muséum d’Histoire Naturelle (Museum of Natural History)? I’m not saying this to be funny or as a metaphor, but this is true. When you drive into Switzerland for France, Austria, Italy or…

My 5 Top Solo Senior Female Travel Destinations
Amazing Amsterdam to Bergen by Train
Almost fifty years ago, I discovered train travel. It’s hard to believe that much time has passed since then. During my solo adventure, I embarked on a train journey from Amsterdam, Holland to Bergen, Norway. Amsterdam to Bergen by Train Ah, money was scarce back then, forcing me to endure countless hours in an upright chair. But times have changed, my friends. Now, I yearn for opulent adventures. Embarking on a train journey from Amsterdam to Bergen offers travellers an opportunity to witness the stunning transition from the bustling urban landscapes of the Netherlands to the serene fjords of Norway….
New Year’s Eve Celebrations Around Europe
It was disappointing that there were no Official New Year’s Eve Celebrations here in Montreal. “Montréal en Fêtes cited rising production costs, difficulty finding labour and financing challenges among its reasons for cancelling the festival.” We usually see all the fantastic fireworks from our balcony overlooking Old Montreal. I can’t complain. Over the years, we have had fantastic New Year’s Eve celebrations, from cruises to mountaintops. We were fortunate to spend 11 years in Europe. During that time, we always liked to have the boys with us for Christmas. We would often send them back to Canada to spend the rest…
The Dignified Dolmens of Carnac
There’s something about the “Standing Stones” that seems to fascinate everyone. Seeing them, such as the Dolmens of Carnac, is quite remarkable. I understand now that people are often disappointed in Stonehenge because of the over-tourism and limited access. It was different for me the first time I saw them as a younger child. But one doesn’t have to venture far to visit the more isolated stones of Avebury. In 2008, we were living in Geneva and looking for a holiday. France is always attractive, but driving can be somewhat of a nightmare with traffic jams no matter the season….
The Essential Art of Dodging Pickpockets in Europe
Day 75 – Porto, Portugal
Intermittent rain all day. We discussed parking at the front desk. Because we’re right in the core, the “special rate” is €23 a day. Because we stayed another three days, we were told about a parking lot, which is a 12-minute walk away and has a special rate of 72 hours for €20. That’s a savings of €50 so of course we decided to move the car We walked down towards the bridges and along to see the Se Do Porto before crossing the Ponte Dom Luisi to catch the cable car that would take us to Port Wine Cellars…
Day 71 – Goodbye, Switzerland. Hello Portugal.
Goodbye, Switzerland. Hello Portugal. We are now on the home stretch, renting a car in Lisbon and rolling up to friends north towards Porto for a couple of nights. Christopher asked me a few days ago if I would do this trip again. Even if I didn’t know what a challenge it would be at times, I most definitely would. But would I do it again in the future? Probably not. I learned a few ways of doing it differently, but I think the following statistics speak for themselves. 20 different planes (one more to go). Six car rentals. 25…
