We are off to Middlebury, Vermont, for a pet-sitting opportunity later this week. I have fond memories of Vermont. Growing up in Montreal, we would often take short trips down to bordering states. One of my fondest memories is when my mother and her friends would go to Burlington for a shopping weekend. The objective was to get Christmas gifts for the kids. Of course, I was excited to contemplate what my Mum might bring home. I remember getting a gumball machine. It was so cool, and nobody else had one. The Canadian dollar was pegged to the US dollar,…

Discovering the Mystique of the Forest of Brocéliande
It was precisely 10 years ago today that we took a trip to the Forest of Brocéliande, also known as Paimpont Forest, nestled in Brittany, France. Our two sons pestered us to visit, and it turned out to be a wonderful time. Famous for its legendary tales, breathtaking natural beauty, and historic sites, the forest blurs the line between myth and reality. Visitors are drawn to its mysterious allure, as the forest holds deep connections to the legends of King Arthur, Merlin the Wizard, and the elusive Lady of the Lake. A Glimpse into Brocéliande’s Mythological Ties A Landscape Steeped…

Honey, I’ve Shrunk
I’m not talking about how I’ve shrunk from losing weight. I’m incredibly grateful to have taken the Ozempic without any side effects. Over the past year and a half, I have dropped nearly one-quarter of my body weight, or about 55 pounds. So, let me get back to how I’ve shrunk. I went from 5‘6“ to 5‘4“sometime in the last 15 years. I did some research online, and it appears that one is at one’s tallest around 40 years of age, and after that, particularly between the ages of 60 and 80, it’s not uncommon to lose 2 inches. Although…
Amazing Amsterdam to Bergen by Train
Almost fifty years ago, I discovered train travel. It’s hard to believe that much time has passed since then. During my solo adventure, I embarked on a train journey from Amsterdam, Holland to Bergen, Norway. Amsterdam to Bergen by Train Ah, money was scarce back then, forcing me to endure countless hours in an upright chair. But times have changed, my friends. Now, I yearn for opulent adventures. Embarking on a train journey from Amsterdam to Bergen offers travellers an opportunity to witness the stunning transition from the bustling urban landscapes of the Netherlands to the serene fjords of Norway….
New Year’s Eve Celebrations Around Europe
It was disappointing that there were no Official New Year’s Eve Celebrations here in Montreal. “Montréal en Fêtes cited rising production costs, difficulty finding labour and financing challenges among its reasons for cancelling the festival.” We usually see all the fantastic fireworks from our balcony overlooking Old Montreal. I can’t complain. Over the years, we have had fantastic New Year’s Eve celebrations, from cruises to mountaintops. We were fortunate to spend 11 years in Europe. During that time, we always liked to have the boys with us for Christmas. We would often send them back to Canada to spend the rest…
Remembering Nice France
An article about Nice France popped up on my Facebook timeline the other day and it got me reminiscing a bit about the time we spent there as a family. My partner is all excited about how wonderful nieces and I guess I was a little underwhelmed. We had a lovely apartment hotel with the Citadine practically on the coastline. I must say that the parking underneath was the scariest I’ve ever had to maneuver, and I swore that I would arrive and never go out with the car again until we left. I settled in I found Nice France…
The Dignified Dolmens of Carnac
There’s something about the “Standing Stones” that seems to fascinate everyone. Seeing them, such as the Dolmens of Carnac, is quite remarkable. I understand now that people are often disappointed in Stonehenge because of the over-tourism and limited access. It was different for me the first time I saw them as a younger child. But one doesn’t have to venture far to visit the more isolated stones of Avebury. In 2008, we were living in Geneva and looking for a holiday. France is always attractive, but driving can be somewhat of a nightmare with traffic jams no matter the season….
Rouses Point and Border Crossings
Yesterday, we drove down from Montreal to Rouses Point, New York State, to visit an old friend and have lunch together. I had utterly forgotten how close the US border is for us and how easy border crossings still are for us. At the main crossings, the lines can be rather long. The driving took about an hour, considerably less than a trip to Rawdon. We took a back road across the border and down to Rouses Point to avoid a significant crossing. Rawdon – The Perfect Day Trip From Montreal Rouses Point is a charming village in upstate New…
