If you’ve ever wanted to see evolution in action, the Galápagos is the place. We arrived at the end of our South American trip in the spring of 2024, carrying all the usual expectations and a healthy dose of curiosity. Still, nothing prepares you for how these islands quietly shift your perspective. The Galápagos isn’t just another stop on the map—it’s a reminder of how unpredictable and remarkable the natural world can be. The first thing that struck me was how unbothered the wildlife seemed by my presence. Sea lions lounged on the sand like they owned the place (and,…

Exploring Napier, New Zealand
Napier, located on New Zealand’s North Island, is a charming seaside city renowned for its Art Deco architecture, stunning landscapes, and vibrant wine culture. We loved to visit and went for weekend trips quite a few times while we lived in Wellington. For all travellers, Napier offers a blend of relaxation, culture, and adventure tailored to various mobility levels and interests. Here’s your guide to making the most of your visit to this delightful city. Getting to Napier By Car: A scenic drive along State Highway 2 from Wellington (around four hours) or Auckland (around five hours) offers opportunities to…
A Day Trip To Chambly, Quebec
Bonaventure-et-du-Rocher-Percé National Park
I’ll never forget a cartoon that I saw probably 50 years ago. Two individuals were looking at this apocalyptic sunset, and the caption read, “You’ve seen one sunset; you’ve seen them all.” I talked with a woman a while ago about our travels and the significant places we had visited. She commented that she was disappointed in Ulhura and that it was just a red rock. So, with that in mind, and tongue in cheek, I thought I would write about our visit to Bonaventure Ireland with that same attitude. The Bonaventure Island off of Percé epitomizes three things. I…
Pointe-à-la-Renommée and Marconi: Untold Stories Off the Beaten Track
We would never have considered this side trip if it had not been for the recommendation of our Gite hosts the day before. We almost missed the turn and wondered if our decision was a good idea as we transited the dirt road. We are so glad we continued on the site. One can walk around the site for free, which is lovely, but the exhibitions are excellently presented. The cost was well worth the $16, and completely bilingual. If you travel around the peninsula on Route 132, consider heading to Pointe-à-la-Renommée. It’s off the beaten track, but the stories…
Best Cartagena Excursions and Sightseeing
We left for our South American trip two days ago, and I have barely looked at Cartagena excursions and sightseeing. While I spent hours and hours arranging it and booking activities, I really haven’t had the chance to study the areas that we’re going to first. So, I thought I’d do a little bit of research on our first two stops. We were a little worried about the safety of travelling in Colombia, so we spent most of our time in Carteina. We began our trip in Cartagena, Colombia, arriving at 8:30 a.m. after leaving Montreal at 9:30 the evening…
New Orleans Jazz, Food and Fun
New Orleans Jazz and Food was everything I expected to be and more. I had visited the city in my teens which, of course, provides a completely different perspective. I remember the cemeteries with the mausoleum above ground. It was the first time I’d seen that way and it always struck me as fascinating. The other thing I remember is the vibrancy as we walked around the streets of the French Quarter. What was new to me was the music. I knew New Orleans was renowned for jazz, but I couldn’t believe how fantastic it was. On almost every street…
Unbelievable lobster and herrings
We just returned from a few days in Les Iles de la Madeleine. It was much shorter than expected, but that’s another story you can find here: Good Grief Deer Lake Newfoundland But at least we got our full of lobster! The weather was reasonable, considering we are revisiting at the end of approximately a four-month season. Les Iles de la Madeleine is extremely popular amongst French Canadians. It is much less known elsewhere. The islands are between three Canadian provinces, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland, in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. However, it “belongs” to Quebec. The…
Day 30 – Sadly, Our Time In Maui Is Ending
No pictures today of Maui except for the one down towards Waikiki Beach. We checked out of our lovely place in Piaha at 10 AM and had a few hours before our flight left at 3 PM. We went and rechecked the surfers for a bit of a while at Ho’okipa Beach Park. Ho’okipa Lookout For watching the surfers and epic surf, Ho’okipa Lookout is the place to be. The lookout is on the edge of a cliff overlooking “Pavilions” – the popular surfing-end of the beach. Conditions permitting, more adventurous folks walk down toward the tip of the rocky…
Day 10 – The Sensational Bryce Canyon
Today was supposed to be a relaxing day visiting Bryce Canyon. We stayed just about 20 minutes outside the park and in a lovely little cabin. It was nice to have no worries about making noises around us. We spent five hours at the national park, and yes, it was a relaxing day, but all the fantastic views were somewhat overwhelming. The Grand Canyon receives 5 million visitors a year, and while somewhat remote, it’s much more accessible than Bryce Canyon, which is smaller and receives 2.5 million visitors yearly. Most visitors are interested in the first 3 miles of…
