The Tenement Museum in New York City is a unique historical museum dedicated to preserving the history and legacy of the immigrants who lived in the Lower East Side of Manhattan during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The museum is located in two tenement buildings at 97 and 103 Orchard Street, constructed in the 1860s and served as homes to thousands of immigrants from various countries. A tenement is legally defined in New York by the Tenement House Act of 1867 as “any house, building, or portion thereof, which is rented, leased, let or hired out to be occupied or is…

The Wonderful Whitney Museum
The Whitney Museum was high on our list to visit, as we missed it the last time we were here in New York City. We went this past weekend because Edward Hopper’s New York exhibition and the At the Dawn of a New Age: Early Twentieth-Century American Modernism were leaving within the following week. There were no deals on memberships so we just purchased a one-time visit. It was jam-packed for the Hopper exhibition on level 5, which did deter my interest a bit. I did enjoy his sketches for the various magazine cover he created. The Whitney Museum…
The New Group and The Seagull Play Broadway
The broadway version is adapted from “The Seagull” by Russian playwright Anton Chekhov, first performed in 1896. The play is a four-act drama focusing on the lives and relationships of several characters, all artists, who gather at a country estate. It deals with lost opportunities and the clash between generations. “The Seagull” is considered a masterpiece of modern drama and has significantly influenced the development of theatre and literature. It has been adapted into many different forms, including films, operas, and plays, and continues to be widely performed and studied today. The Guggenheim Museum and Nick Caves
MembershipsMembershipsSaturday, we visited the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. Some people may tell you that it is the building and not the artwork that is the most impressive. It is true that the building itself is quite a design feat. The most distinctive feature of the museum is its unique architectural design, which features a cylindrical shape and a spiralling ramp that ascends through the building’s six levels. This design allows visitors to view the artworks from different angles and perspectives as they move through the museum. The Guggenheim Museum is a modern and contemporary art museum located in New York…
Talk Show Live From New York
I went to my first live studio talk show yesterday – Late Night with Stephen Colbert. Well, I have been to a live show studio once before when I was about 13. More on that another time. This was more of a performance and a lengthy one at that. But, oh my, the time waiting is ridiculous. Let me give you a typical wait time for a Talk Show. 15:00 – Priority Check-in opens for those with a “ticket.” 16:00 – Priority Check-in closes / Group A Check-in opens. 17:00 – Load into Studio 17:30 – Warm-up, but at least we…
Broadway Review of Pictures From Home
Today I got rush tickets on broadway to see a matinee of “Pictures From Home” starring Nathan Lane, Zoë Wanamaker and Danny Burstein. This is a challenging play, and I think it would not be easy to pull off without these three excellent actors. While Nathan lane might get most of the credit as the headliner, in my opinion, the son’s part is the most challenging. I love Nathan Lane, and I’ve seen him in many performances on TV and in movies and was excited too I see him perform live. I was a little concerned that since most of…
Package Deals for Maui – A Good Decision or Not
I have mixed feelings about package deals. Sometimes I love them, and sometimes I avoid them like the plague. I planned to fly over immediately to Maui upon arrival in Honolulu to stay for a few days before flying back for the last few days on O’ahu Island before going to New Zealand. After booking the flight with Hawaiian Airlines, the opportunity came up to book a car and accommodation. Usually, I am a little reluctant to do so as you pay upfront and are then committed. I had been booking and changing so much for other places that I…
Day 62 – Jaipur and The Golden Triangle
The Golden Triangle is a famous tourist circuit in India, including three major cities – Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur. I was very impressed with Thailand and enjoyed it immensely, except for the weather. But India is a whole other ball game- it is truly unique. This is the perfect time of year as the weather is ideal. Louise was a little reluctant initially, but I told her about the Taj Mahal, and she was all in. Once I arranged for a driver, it became too much driving. It also meant four nights in four different places. Jaipur, a UNESCO heritage…
Pearl Hotel Waikiki – A Better Budget Choice
It was a big step down to the Pearl Hotel Waikiki after almost two weeks in fabulous accommodations with king-size beds. Maui was expensive, but Honolulu and Waikiki are probably worse. Even though it’s considered somewhat off-season for a good hotel, it’s $300-$350 a night, and we did get a much better deal. But there is a $35 amenity charge per night, no matter where you stay. We encountered a similar tourist tax in Las Vegas, except that we stayed off the strip to avoid this charge. Benefits of The Pearl Hotel Waikiki The Pearl Hotel is something out of…
Day 32 – The Golden Circle Tour of O’ahu
Renting a car in Honolulu is costly; parking alone is $35 a night at the hotel. Others told us we didn’t have a car, as buses could go all around the island. No one told us it would be hours and hours going around the island. I convinced Louise to take the Golden Circle Tour of O‘ahu, which meant getting up a little earlier than we liked. It was nine hours long, had 12 stops, and was inexpensive. They did advertize that they would pick us up at our hotel, but they didn’t. The meeting point was only a five-minute…
