There are so many reasons why I love the GuideAlong app.
- It's Canadian
- I adore the narrator and how he seems to know each spot personally (which, of course, he doesn't)
- While limited, the tours have been perfect for our trips
- It is thorough, educational and humourous
- It is easy to use
- It is a fantastic value for what I am getting
I could go on, but let's talk more about the history and specifics of the app.
The GuideAlong app (formerly known as GyPSy Guide) is a popular travel companion for road trippers and adventurers seeking an enhanced and informative experience while exploring scenic destinations. This GPS-based audio tour app provides engaging commentary, insider tips, and historical context for various locations across North America and beyond.
For those exploring the destinations covered by GuideAlong, the app offers an affordable, flexible, and delightful way to learn about the places they visit. Over the past few years, I have purchased about half the tours available, but since they have added so many more, I am down to one-third.
Here are some posts where I have used GuideAlong:
- Day 9; The Mighty 5 National Parks
- Day 27; The Road To Hana, Maui
- A Perfect Day Trip in Vermont

Below is a detailed review of the GuideAlong app's development history, strengths, and potential drawbacks.
Development History
GuideAlong was launched initially as GyPSy Guide, a concept developed by Rick Bulich, a Canadian entrepreneur and travel enthusiast. It was founded in Canmore, Alberta, and specializes in GPS-triggered audio tours for road trips and national parks across North America. The company provides offline, location-based travel guides that enhance road trips with storytelling, history, and tips, all without requiring cellular or Wi-Fi connections.
The app's idea was born out of a desire to provide travellers with a more immersive and informative experience while driving through scenic routes and national parks. Bulich recognized that many travellers missed out on the rich history, culture, and natural wonders of the areas they visited simply because they couldn’t access a knowledgeable guide.
The app initially focused on providing audio tours for popular destinations in Canada, such as the Canadian Rockies, before expanding to include locations in the United States, including iconic national parks like Yellowstone, Yosemite, and the Grand Canyon. Over time, the app grew in popularity due to its user-friendly design, high-quality narration, and ability to function offline, making it ideal for remote areas with limited cell service.
In 2021, the app rebranded from GyPSy Guide to GuideAlong to better reflect its mission of guiding travellers along their journeys. The rebranding also included updates to the app’s interface and new tours, further solidifying its reputation as a must-have tool for road trippers.
What Makes the GuideAlong App Great
1. Engaging and Informative Audio Tours
The core feature of GuideAlong is its GPS-triggered audio commentary, which provides fascinating insights about the locations you’re driving through. The narration is professional, engaging, and often infused with humour, making it feel like you’re travelling with a knowledgeable acquaintance.
I must say that the narrator sometimes makes us laugh with his corny humour. He also talks about places as though he has first hand experience which while unlikely is very endearing.
The app covers a broad range of topics, including history, geology, wildlife, and local culture, ensuring that there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
2. Range of Destinations
GuideAlong offers audio tours for over 30 destinations, including national parks, scenic drives, and popular tourist regions. Some popular tours include Yellowstone National Park, the Road to Hana in Maui, and the Canadian Rockies. The app continually expands its library, making it a valuable resource for exploring new road trips.
3. GPS-Triggered Content
One of the app’s standout features is its GPS-triggered functionality. As you drive, the app automatically plays relevant commentary based on your location, ensuring you never miss an interesting fact or landmark. This hands-free approach lets you focus on the road while enjoying the tour.
4. Offline Functionality
GuideAlong is designed to work offline, a significant advantage for road trips through remote areas with limited or no cell service. Users can download the tours in advance, ensuring uninterrupted access to the audio commentary throughout their journey.
5. User-Friendly Interface
The app is easy to use, with a clean and intuitive interface. You can browse available tours, download them offline, and start their journey with just a few taps. The app also provides clear instructions on how to use it effectively, making it accessible even if you are not tech-savvy.
6. Cost-Effective Alternative to Guided Tours
GuideAlong is a budget-friendly alternative to hiring a private guide or joining a group tour. It is perfect if you are driving on a trip. The app’s one-time purchase model for individual tours (or bundles) allows users to access high-quality commentary at a fraction of the cost of traditional guided experiences. I love the value I get from the bundles.
7. Flexibility and Independence
Unlike traditional guided tours, GuideAlong allows you to explore independently. You can stop for photos, take detours, or skip sections without worrying about missing out on the commentary. This flexibility makes it ideal for independent travellers and families.
Drawbacks That I Think Are Minor Considerations
1. Limited Coverage
While GuideAlong offers tours for many popular destinations, its coverage is not comprehensive. Travellers visiting less well-known locations or international destinations may find that the app does not have a tour for their chosen route. However, the app’s library continually expands, so this may improve over time. While limited, they have been growing very rapidly.
2. One-Time Purchase Model
Although the app’s one-time purchase model is VERY cost-effective for frequent travellers, some users may find the cost of individual tours (typically ranging from $10 to $25) a drawback, especially if they are only visiting a single destination. There is no subscription option for tour access, which could be more appealing for some users. But as I have stated before, I really feel this is affordable when you often pay more for less.
3. No Real-Time Interaction
While the app provides excellent commentary, it lacks the real-time interaction and personalized recommendations that a live guide can offer. Travellers who enjoy asking questions or discussing may find this aspect limiting. I am unaware of ANY app that could do this. While it isn't in real-time, I often feel it is interactive due to the style and comments from the commentator.
5. Dependence on GPS (?)
The app’s functionality relies on GPS and could occasionally be affected by poor signal reception in certain areas. While rare, it can disrupt the seamless experience the app aims to provide. So far, I have had no issues.
My Strong Recommendation
The GuideAlong app is a fantastic tool for road trippers and adventurers who want to enhance their travel experience with engaging and informative audio tours. Its GPS-triggered commentary, offline functionality, and a decent range of destinations make it a valuable companion for exploring national parks, scenic drives, and other iconic locations. The app’s development history reflects its commitment to providing high-quality content and a user-friendly experience, and its rebranding as GuideAlong has only strengthened its appeal.
Whether driving through the Everglades, navigating the Road to Hana, or exploring The Grand Canyon, GuideAlong is a reliable and entertaining travel companion that will accompany you on your life journey.
I wish they had accepted me as an affiliate but they didn't – so that's life!
Interesting Footnote:
The voice behind the GuideAlong app is Canadian actor and voice talent Dave Pettitt. With a career over 25 years, Pettitt has lent his voice to various commercials, television series, and video games. Notably, he narrates the TV series “Highway Thru Hell” and its sister series “Heavy Rescue: 401”. Pettitt operates from his studio in Nanaimo, British Columbia, and owns Dave Pettitt Voice Overs Inc.
