Solo female travel has surged in popularity, empowering women to explore the world on our terms. Many destinations offer adventure and safety, ensuring women can enjoy their travels without concerns. The following five countries are based on my experiences living in two and travelling to the others. After visiting 60 countries, I found these stand out as the safest worldwide and the best places to visit if you are newer to solo travelling.

ToggleTop 5 Countries for the over 60 crowd
1. Japan: Tradition Meets Technology
Japan is renowned for its blend of the ultramodern and the deeply traditional, making it an exciting destination for solo female travellers. The country consistently ranks among the safest in the world, with low crime rates and highly efficient public transport. Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto offer diverse experiences, from neon-lit streets to serene temples.
Why Japan?
- Safety: Japan consistently ranks among the safest countries for female travellers. The 2019 Global Peace Index ranked Japan as the 9th safest country globally.
- Ease of Navigation: Japan is accessible even for first-time visitors, with English signage in public places and a user-friendly transport system.
- Top Attractions:
- Tokyo's sensory overload of technology and culture
- Kyoto's temples and traditional tea ceremonies
- Osaka’s culinary scene, including takoyaki and okonomiyaki
Travel Tip: Consider staying in a ryokan (a traditional inn) for a truly authentic experience. Perhaps a cruise might be a great introduction to the country.
2. Iceland: The Land of Fire and Ice
While it was costly, I loved my trip there last year. Iceland is often hailed as one of the top solo female travel destinations, thanks to its stunning natural landscapes and low crime rates. The island is known for its welcoming atmosphere, where locals and visitors alike look out for each other. If you love the extreme cold, that's fine; go in the winter. Otherwise, having been there off-season, I would strongly recommend the summer. I REALLY wanted to Snorkel in Silfra Fissure between two tectonic plates, a once-in-a-lifetime experience. While it is possible year-round, even with a proper wetsuit, I can't imagine how cold it would be.
Why Iceland?
- Safety: Iceland is often listed as one of the safest countries in the world. Its peaceful society and low crime rate make it ideal for solo travellers.
- Natural Wonders: With waterfalls, glaciers, volcanoes, and the iconic Blue Lagoon, Iceland offers an outdoor playground for nature lovers.
- Top Experiences:
- The Golden Circle: a popular route including Þingvellir National Park, Geysir, and Gullfoss waterfall
- Snorkel in Silfra Fissure
- Northern Lights hunting in winter
- Exploring Reykjavik, one of Europe’s most charming capitals
Travel Tip: Renting a car allows you to explore at your own pace, giving you access to Iceland’s more remote beauty spots.
3. New Zealand: Adventure Awaits

What more can I say? We lived in Wellington for four years, a magical country. New Zealand is a haven for thrill-seekers and nature enthusiasts. We are not into super athletic adventures, but there is much more. Its outdoor activities, combined with Kiwis' laid-back and friendly nature, make it an excellent destination for solo female travellers.
I say that New Zealanders are even friendlier than Canadians, and if I could live in Canada, I would choose to live here.
Why New Zealand?
- Safety: New Zealand is ranked among the top 20 safest countries globally.
- Unique Wildlife and Fauna: Known as the home of four species of Kiwis, NZ is also home to other unique birds, including penguins, albatross, gannets and more.

- Taking a scenic drive through the Southern Alps
- Relaxing in the geothermal pools of Rotorua
Travel Tip: If you're not into extreme sports, don’t worry—New Zealand also offers wine tours, art galleries, and relaxing beach towns. Rent a car or small van and spend at least two weeks on the North Island and then another two on the South Island.
4. Portugal: A Mix of Sun, Culture, and History
I have had the good fortune to visit Portugal a few times and fell in love with Lisbon. With its affordable prices, beautiful landscapes, and welcoming locals, Portugal is a gem for solo female travellers. Whether you're soaking up the sun in the Algarve or exploring the historic streets of Lisbon, Portugal provides a rich cultural experience.

I might be biased, but Canada is a massive country with something for everyone. Whether you want to experience multicultural cities like Vancouver and Quebec City or explore the wild beauty of the Rockies, it’s an ideal destination for solo female travellers. Just remember it is the second largest geographical country in the world, so you might want to make different travel trips.

- Variety: From cosmopolitan urban centres to wilderness adventures, Canada offers incredible diversity for any travel style.

6. Bonus – All of Scandinavia
I realize that this is not one country, but having travelled to all but Finland, I can confidently say this is a great place for solo women travellers. My first solo trip in the mid-seventies was throughout Northern Europe, and I loved Norway. When I went, they no longer had the train ride from Oslo to Bergen, but some fabulous train rides and cruises are now available.
