Who has the time to make countless phone calls, compare rates and routes on maps, and search for the best deals? Thankfully, technology has come to the rescue. With technological advancements, you can save time and money while planning your dream trip.
Looking back on when I first began our around-the-world trip, I am not sure how manageable it would have been if I had not used technology for travel planning.
9 Tips on How to Use Technology For Travel Planning
Here are some practical ways to plan an inexpensive trip using technology for travel without sacrificing your valuable time:
1. Embrace flexibility:
Flexibility with your travel plans allows you to capitalize on the best deals available. Consider exploring multiple options instead of limiting yourself to a specific airline or departure date. You can discover more savings and adjust your schedule by remaining open to different possibilities.
2. Utilize destination search engines:
Use destination search engines tailored to your desired location to streamline your search process and save time. These specific websites provide comprehensive information on money-saving flights, hotels, and other essential aspects of your vacation.
4. Subscribe to promotional emails:
While promotional emails may clutter your inbox, they often contain exclusive deals unavailable on regular websites. However, it's essential to be selective and only sign up for deals from companies that align with your travel plans and preferences. Avoid overwhelming yourself with irrelevant offers.
5. Explore deal sites:
Deal sites such as Vacations To Go for cruises can be a valuable resource for travellers looking to save money. These platforms aggregate information on various deals and allow you to set up alerts specific to your preferred area. By staying connected to these sites, you can stay informed about the latest discounts and offers. I have been on VacationsToGo email list for at least 20 years and have booked through them on many occasions.
6. Follow companies on social media:
This tip is something I confess I haven't tried. I do follow Princess Lines on Facebook, as I have enjoyed their cruises over the years. Many companies share exclusive deals and important travel updates on social media platforms. However, it's crucial to be discerning and follow companies you intend to utilize during your trip. By selectively choosing a few key companies to follow, you can easily manage the influx of information while staying updated on the best deals.
7. Consider loyalty programs:
Loyalty programs offered by airlines, hotels, and other travel-related services can be a great way to save money. These programs often provide point redemptions for upgrades, complimentary amenities, and exclusive discounts. By joining these loyalty programs, you can stay informed about the latest deals and take advantage of their benefits.
If I fly on an airline, I ensure I have signed up for their program. I also belong to about four hotel chains. I cannot always take advantage of the points in the proper timeframe, but we do get treated well as loyal clients.
8. Explore package deals:
Booking your hotel, airline, and rental car from the same provider simultaneously can often lead to significant discounts. Companies offering package deals encourage customers to book everything together, resulting in lower prices and additional perks. It's important to note that package deals vary depending on the company and location.
This year alone, 2023, we have booked three package deals. The first with Icelandic Air, the second with CAA (the Canadian equivalent of AAA) to Les Iles de la Madeleine, and the third to Washington D.C with Booking.com
9. Check your credit card benefits:
If you use credit cards, explore any special travel deals or discounts they may offer. Credit card companies frequently partner with hotels, rental car services, and travel agencies to provide their customers with exclusive savings. By utilizing your participating credit card for bookings, you can take advantage of these discounts and maximize your savings.
I recently took out a TD credit card specifically for Air Canada. If I spend a set amount, I will get over 70K Aeroplan points in a year. Then I will see if it is worth keeping for the price. If you are in the US, many travellers recommend Chase. Check out this site which compares various credit card offers.
