I came across a deal to watch the autumn leaves on a train from Saint Albans, about an hour and 15 south of Montreal and Vermont, down to Washington, D.C. It was a ridiculously cheap fare, but it was 13 hours. There was no way Louise would be inconsiderate on so many accounts, but she suggested my brother, and Greg was keen. Since I couldn’t turn around to get up at dawn the next day, we decided to stay in Washington for two nights. I don’t know what happened in the last three years, but hotels in big cities like…

Discovering the Mystique of the Forest of Brocéliande
It was precisely 10 years ago today that we took a trip to the Forest of Brocéliande, also known as Paimpont Forest, nestled in Brittany, France. Our two sons pestered us to visit, and it turned out to be a wonderful time. Famous for its legendary tales, breathtaking natural beauty, and historic sites, the forest blurs the line between myth and reality. Visitors are drawn to its mysterious allure, as the forest holds deep connections to the legends of King Arthur, Merlin the Wizard, and the elusive Lady of the Lake. A Glimpse into Brocéliande’s Mythological Ties A Landscape Steeped…
A Day Trip To Chambly, Quebec
Skydiving no longer on my bucket list
Sometimes, the best travel experiences are practically in your own backyard. That’s probably why I write so much about Montreal or local day trips. Stories about Montreal Unless you’re a full-time nomad, there are many opportunities to visit things closer to home. I’ve had this strange sense of urgency this year. It’s made me want to plan and schedule everything I want to do before I pass on. We did South America this spring, And I booked our trip to South Africa for next October. But it’s not all about travel. It’s also about certain things that I wanted to…

Bonaventure-et-du-Rocher-Percé National Park
I’ll never forget a cartoon that I saw probably 50 years ago. Two individuals were looking at this apocalyptic sunset, and the caption read, “You’ve seen one sunset; you’ve seen them all.” I talked with a woman a while ago about our travels and the significant places we had visited. She commented that she was disappointed in Ulhura and that it was just a red rock. So, with that in mind, and tongue in cheek, I thought I would write about our visit to Bonaventure Ireland with that same attitude. The Bonaventure Island off of Percé epitomizes three things. I…
Stuck in Percé – Learning to Go With The Flow
Over the years, our travel plans have mostly gone according to plan. There have always been a few, but nothing like this happened to us on this trip. To a Mouse Robbie Burns The best laid schemes o’ Mice an’ Men Gang aft agley The clutch started slipping shortly after our trip around the Gaspé Peninsula. By the time we had crossed off the ferry to the south shore, it was starting to get pretty bad. Unfortunately, there was no decent place to stop, and we weren’t staying very long. By the time we reached Percé, it was pretty clear…
Pointe-à-la-Renommée and Marconi: Untold Stories Off the Beaten Track
We would never have considered this side trip if it had not been for the recommendation of our Gite hosts the day before. We almost missed the turn and wondered if our decision was a good idea as we transited the dirt road. We are so glad we continued on the site. One can walk around the site for free, which is lovely, but the exhibitions are excellently presented. The cost was well worth the $16, and completely bilingual. If you travel around the peninsula on Route 132, consider heading to Pointe-à-la-Renommée. It’s off the beaten track, but the stories…
Honey, I’ve Shrunk
I’m not talking about how I’ve shrunk from losing weight. I’m incredibly grateful to have taken the Ozempic without any side effects. Over the past year and a half, I have dropped nearly one-quarter of my body weight, or about 55 pounds. So, let me get back to how I’ve shrunk. I went from 5‘6“ to 5‘4“sometime in the last 15 years. I did some research online, and it appears that one is at one’s tallest around 40 years of age, and after that, particularly between the ages of 60 and 80, it’s not uncommon to lose 2 inches. Although…
