Perhaps our luck has changed. We had a wonderful day visiting Antelope Canyon and Monument Valley. Today will be one of the most expensive days on our South West road trip and maybe our 85 days. The two tours we are taking are not part of the National Parks, so we have both entrance and tour fees. No regrets – these two sites were breathtaking. Antelope Canyon The Antelope Canyon, run by the Navajo, is remarkable. It had rained today before, and they’d had flash floods. Everything is OK for our trip through the canyon. It’s a 10-minute drive through…

Day 4 – Visiting Around Page Arizona
Today we were considering the north rim and back to Page. However, as I looked at the driving time, I decided it was best to visit many amazing sites around Page Arizona. I still think that the North Rim is more majestic than the south rim of the Grand Canyon, BUT given all the other beautiful things we would be seeing on our journey, I didn’t think missing it would be too much. We tried to book Antelope Canyon, but it was sold out for the day and the next day. We went to another tour company, and they did…
Day 3 – Bad Hotels and The Grand Canyon
Our minor lousy luck continues as we head up to The Grand Canyon. I won’t go into it, but the bathroom in our room was not cleaned very well. We didn’t discover it until after we had settled and didn’t want to move. At first, it just seemed to be dirty towels, and we complained. Later, we discovered it was much worse than they offered us a significant rebate. They were as upset about the situation as we were. We made our way up to the Grand Canyon South rim from Flagstaff. As you can imagine, it was terrific, and…
Day 2 – Route 89 Through Sedona
The day started with good news. We got a message that our luggage would arrive around 9:30 am. The old geezer who delivered our suitcases was pretty fascinating. He’s been skating with “Disney On Ice” for the past 40 years and had travelled everywhere. He gave us some advice on what to do for the day, and we decided to take him up. Our first stop was at Montezuma Castle, where I needed to pick up our national park pass. The whole area was outstanding and worth spending time. Established December 8, 1906, Montezuma Castle is the third National Monument…
Day 1 of our world trip started well but . . .
My brother dropped us off for the start of our world trip at the airport in plenty of time. It felt like our suitcases were bursting at the seams and were overweight, but each piece of luggage was around 17 kg, and our carry-on backpacks were around 5 kg. At our age, this was still hard on our bodies and proved to be more so as our journeys continued. The place seemed empty, and the check-in went smoothly. Good for us, but terrible for the travellers going to Florida: at least five flights had been cancelled due to hurricane Ian….
Survival with One Suitcase for Three Months
I have no doubts that packing one suitcase for three months is possible. My concern is whether I will be packing the right things. There are a lot of items I need to bring but I need to keep in mind the following when it comes specifically to clothes: locations (what is the terrain like) weather (what are the seasons and temperatures like) religion (as a woman, do I need to be adequately covered) modes of travel (weight, size and amount restrictions) Here is what I know about our trip relating to these: locations (rugged in parts and lots of…
God save the Queen, 1926-2022, RIP
The news of Her Majesty’s passing made me reminisce about past travels and adventures. RIP Many people think the monarchy is archaic and needs to go, but I’ve always been fond of her. Queen Elizabeth was an extraordinary public servant who worked diligently for 70 years. And that deserves to be acknowledged and respected. I remember celebrating her 25th anniversary on the throne back in 1977. I had just graduated with my MBA and was travelling in northern Europe alone. The celebration occurred when I travelled from Bergen, Norway to Newcastle, England. It seemed like a milestone then, and 50 years…
The only thing I hate about Montreal . . .
Montreal drivers, roads and traffic! I realize these are three items I hate about Montreal, but I couldn’t find a collective term to cover everything. An old Canadian joke says Canada has two seasons: winter and July. This may not be as true now with global warming, but the Montreal version is as accurate as ever. Montreal has two seasons: winter and construction. A recent survey showed that none of the top ten terrible and worst roads in Quebec were in Montreal. At first, I found that hard to believe. But I’ve come to understand why. Every other road is…
