Kaikōura, nestled between the Seaward Kaikōura Range and the Pacific Ocean on New Zealand’s South Island, is a haven for nature enthusiasts and marine wildlife lovers. This charming coastal town offers a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure, making it an ideal destination for senior travellers seeking an enriching two-day getaway.
Getting to Kaikōura
By Train: The Coastal Pacific train operates between Christchurch and Picton, stopping in Kaikōura. This relaxing journey offers panoramic coastline views, rolling hills, and rugged mountains. The train features large windows, comfortable seating, and onboard commentary, making the journey as memorable as the destination. Depart from Picton or Christchurch to include Kaikōura as an overnight stop.
The Coastal Pacific train was closed effective November 2016 as a result of a severe earthquake and finally reopened on December 1, 2018. By chance, we were on that first trip. You could still see repairs along the route. I am so glad we could do it and stop over in Kaikōura for two nights.
It was an easy walk to and from the train station to our accommodations. However, be warned… taxis are not easy to get.
- Book tickets in advance: The train has reserved seating, and walk-on passengers are not accommodated once the train is fully booked.
- Buy tickets at Picton Station: Tickets can be purchased on the day of travel at Picton Station, but booking online in advance is recommended.
- Standing is not allowed: If all seats are sold out, you cannot travel.
By Car: Kaikōura is approximately a 2.5-hour drive (180 km) from Christchurch via State Highway 1. The scenic coastal drive offers breathtaking views, with opportunities to stop and enjoy the landscape.
By Bus: Intercity bus services connect Kaikōura with Christchurch and Blenheim, providing a convenient and affordable travel option.

After we had taken a whale-watching tour in the morning, we strolled along the walkway to Ohau Point Seal Colony. Comparing Kaikōura to Other Coastal Destinations
While Napier offers Art Deco architecture and wine tours, Kaikōura provides a more nature-centric experience with marine wildlife and rugged landscapes. Napier’s flat terrain and urban attractions cater to a more relaxed pace, while Kaikōura appeals to those seeking outdoor adventures.
Paihia (Bay of Islands)
Paihia is another popular coastal destination known for its historic sites and island cruises. Unlike Kaikōura’s focus on marine wildlife, Paihia emphasizes cultural heritage and tropical scenery. Both destinations provide unique experiences for senior travellers.
Abel Tasman National Park
Abel Tasman features golden beaches and lush forests, contrasting with Kaikōura’s dramatic coastal cliffs and marine life. While Abel Tasman is ideal for kayaking and hiking, Kaikōura offers wildlife tours and scenic strolls better suited for varied mobility levels.
