A Two-Day Adventure in Kaikōura

Kaikōura, nestled between the Seaward Kaikōura Range and the Pacific Ocean on New Zealand’s South Island, is a haven for nature enthusiasts and marine wildlife lovers. This charming coastal town offers a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure, making it an ideal destination for senior travellers seeking an enriching two-day getaway.

Getting to Kaikōura

By Train: The Coastal Pacific train operates between Christchurch and Picton, stopping in Kaikōura. This relaxing journey offers panoramic coastline views, rolling hills, and rugged mountains. The train features large windows, comfortable seating, and onboard commentary, making the journey as memorable as the destination. Depart from Picton or Christchurch to include Kaikōura as an overnight stop.

The Coastal Pacific train was closed effective November 2016 as a result of a severe earthquake and finally reopened on December 1, 2018. By chance, we were on that first trip. You could still see repairs along the route. I am so glad we could do it and stop over in Kaikōura for two nights.

It was an easy walk to and from the train station to our accommodations. However, be warned… taxis are not easy to get.

By Car: Kaikōura is approximately a 2.5-hour drive (180 km) from Christchurch via State Highway 1. The scenic coastal drive offers breathtaking views, with opportunities to stop and enjoy the landscape.

By Bus: Intercity bus services connect Kaikōura with Christchurch and Blenheim, providing a convenient and affordable travel option.

Two-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival and Exploration

Morning:

• Arrive in Kaikōura via train or car. The Coastal Pacific train offers a scenic experience with highlights like the Marlborough wine region and coastal vistas.
• Settle into your accommodation. Options include:
  • The White Morph: A waterfront motel with accessible amenities and stunning views.
  • Lobster Inn Motor Lodge: Comfortable and centrally located.

Afternoon:

• Enjoy a seafood lunch at a local café or Nin’s Bin, famous for its fresh crayfish and ocean views.
• Take a whale-watching tour to see majestic sperm whales, orcas, and humpbacks in their natural habitat. Senior-friendly options include spacious catamarans with accessible boarding.

Evening:

• Dine at a local restaurant, sampling Kaikōura’s fresh seafood.
• Relax with a stroll along the waterfront or rest in your accommodation to prepare for Day 2.

Day 2: Wildlife and Scenic Highlights

Morning:

• Start your day with a guided tour of the Ohau Point Seal Colony. Watch fur seals basking on the rocks and learn their habits from knowledgeable guides.
• Explore the Kaikōura Peninsula Walkway. Choose a short, flat section for a stroll or enjoy the scenic vistas from elevated viewpoints.

Lunch:

• Visit a local café for light refreshments, enjoying the town's relaxed atmosphere.

Afternoon:

• Visit Fyffe House, the oldest building in Kaikōura and a relic of the whaling era. The wheelchair-accessible site offers fascinating exhibits about the town’s history.
• Depart for your next destination via train or car. The Coastal Pacific train is an excellent choice for an effortless and scenic journey back to Picton or Christchurch.

Kaikōura is renowned for its year-round whale-watching opportunities. Many operators cater to seniors, offering spacious seating and accessible boarding. Tours pick you up in town and take you to and from the boats.

2. Dolphin and Seal Encounters

Take a guided tour to see playful dolphins or visit the Ohau Point Seal Colony to watch fur seals basking on the rocks. These tours cater to varying mobility levels, ensuring everyone can participate. A guided tour is unnecessary, but transportation back and forth might be challenging.

After we had taken a whale-watching tour in the morning, we strolled along the walkway to Ohau Point Seal Colony. Getting a taxi back to our hotel took a while, but I recommend this route if you haven't come by car.
